First time enrolling? Here's what you need to know
If you want to become a member of Blue Cross and Blue Shield FEP Dental, follow the specific instructions outlined below.
When to enroll
Open Season
Federal employees, USPS employees, retired federal employees, retired USPS employees, retired uniformed service members and their families can enroll in, change or cancel their BCBS FEP Dental plan during Open Season, which is typically the second Monday of November through the second Monday of December each year.
Qualifying Life Event
You might be able to change your health plan outside of Open Season if you have a qualifying life event. These include getting married, having a baby, getting divorced or a change in employee status.
New Hires
If you're a new employee eligible for Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) or Postal Service Health Benefits (PSHB) coverage, you have 60 days from your start date (also known as your entry on duty date) to enroll in a health plan.
Retired Uniformed Service Members
Uniformed service members retiring or recently retired from service may enroll between 31 days before your military retirement date or 60 days after.
Choose a Plan
BCBS FEP Dental has two plans, High Option and Standard Option.
You can choose between three levels of coverage:
Outside of Open Season
- Self Only (coverage for yourself)
- Self + One (coverage for you and one eligible family member)
- Self & Family (coverage for you and multiple eligible family members)
To enroll, visit BENEFEDS.gov or call 1-877-888-FEDS (3337); TTY 711. Create your BENEFEDS account if you're enrolling online and select BCBS FEP Dental.
Start Coverage
If you enroll during Open Season, your coverage begins on January 1.
For those who are newly hired to the federal government or newly retired from the uniformed services, your coverage is effective the first day of the first pay period following the date BENEFEDS receives and confirms your enrollment.
If you're a uniformed service member and you enroll within 31 days of your retirement date, your coverage begins on the day you retire. So, you will not have a gap in coverage. If you enroll within 60 days after your retirement date, your coverage starts on the first of the month following the date you enrolled.
